Cracked heels? Find Your ‘Summer’ Feet

The Podiatry Team

Unsightly cracks, also known as fissures, can often develop on the heel of the foot. This is an extremely common foot complaint but one which is often ignored. If the fissure is deep, it can be painful and prone to infections.

Cracked heels are most common in people who suffer from:

- Diabetes

- Dry skin conditions such as Eczema and Psoriasis

- Thyroid problems

However, you may also be susceptible to cracked heels if you spend a lot of time on your feet, often wear open shoes, or regularly walk barefoot on hard surfaces.

Dry skin on the heels has poor elasticity which can cause it to split (or fissure) as you walk.

Most people tend to ignore their dry, cracked heels in the winter… easily done when you can hide them under boots and socks but, with summer just around the corner, they can no longer be hidden.

The time has come for flip-flops and sandals; it's time to expose your feet by the poolside or at summer functions! So, what is the solution to cracked heels?

Firstly, see one of our team! When there is a significant build up of callus on the heels it is best to have a thorough foot health check and to have any excess callus removed professionally. Thereafter, you can be sure that any advice given is tailor-made for you. Explore our cracked heel treatments

Here's our remedy to keep your feet looking fabulous and prevent the development of cracked heels:

    - Use a paddle file when the feet are dry to smooth any rough, dry skin

    - Wash feet with warm soapy water, and dry them well – paying particular attention to the interdigital areas

    - Once smooth, apply a thick layer of UREA-based emollient to the heels (your Podiatrist or Foot Health Professional will have recommended a suitable one) and massage in thoroughly.

    - If you have a partner, perhaps they could do this for you.

If you carry out this regime once or twice a week, your feet should be feeling silky smooth and ready for summer.
